Side event on the further development of the Sustainable Cities and Eco-energy town Initiative
On May 24, 2018 in Copenhagen, during 9th Clean Energy Ministerial Russia and South Korea organized a side event on the further development of the Sustainable Cities and Eco-energy town Initiative.
The event provided an opportunity to share best practices of improvements in energy efficiency and energy sustainability in cities and rural areas. During the event participants discussed recent trends which accelerate deployment of clean energy technologies and policies for the development of cities and towns and possible synergy between governments and cities (towns) towards clean energy transition.
The panel discussion was attended by Deputy Minister of Energy of Russiaт Federation Anton Inyutsyn, Deputy Minister of Energy of Korea Inho Lee, Director-General, Ministry of Energy (SENER) Santiago Creuheras, representatives of Nordic Energy Research, SINTRA Foundation and UN Center for Energy Efficiency.
The participants of the discussion noted that the development of cities is the main driver of economic growth, therefore the task of each country is to increase energy efficiency, take care of the environment and ensure a decent quality of life in cities. In such conditions, clean and energy-efficient technologies play a key role in the development of the urban environment. Further deepening of international cooperation is an important step towards sustainable development of cities.
Following the discussion, participants identified further priorities in the development of the initiative, including the harmonization of statistical indicators for the development of cities in different countries, the creation and filling of international databases with the best urban practices, and international benchmarking. Also, Russia proposed to establish an award in the field of best practices of energy efficiency of cities.
